The gardens overlooking Funchal
Between the mountains and the ocean, in the tro ¬ anfitea fennel and approximately 3km from the city center, the botanical garden of the wood is a special place where the “knowing” and “pleasure” are complementary, where the man is asked to (re ) discover the fascinating world of plants.
Property of the regional government, has an area of 8 hectares where they discover about 3000 different plants in various parts of the world, with 200 endemic species of plants and Macaronesian exclusive timber. In the main building is the museum of natural history, with about 15,000 specimens, and herbarium, with approximately 24,000 specimens of plants.
At the southern end of this garden is located the blond park with a collection of about 500 exotic birds from 60 different species, such as macaws, cata ¬ yours, parrots and lories.
The botanical garden timber is divided by geographical areas and botanical families, highlighting the contrasting colors and forms harmonics of their gardens. And it is extremely easy to get to the place from the capital of Madeira, as there is a direct lift from Funchal to this site where stood the old farmhouse reid, that the April 30, 1960 led to the botanical garden timber.
Visited annually by more than 350,000 tourists, this nature park has several permanent exhibitions and an auditorium and a center of science and culture.
The garden also plays an important role for research, protection and conservation of natural species endemic to Macaronesia and has recently had a major role in the discovery of new plant echium portosantensis, another endemic species of wood found on the island of porto santo.
