Madeira becomes, once again, the stage for another edition of the Madeira Wine Rally, the largest automobile event in the island. Famous names from the world of motor racing take part in this prestigious car race, which will bring together around 48 competitors. For two days the competitors will drive their cars across the island, bringing excitement to the thousands of people who head towards the mountains of Madeira to get the best view of the speed and skill of the racers.
Basso wins duel with Bruno Magalhães
The Italian driver Giandomenico Basso ( Peugeot 207 S2000 ) today won for the fourth time , the Madeira Wine Rally , in his 54 . Edition , beating competition from the Portuguese Bruno Magalhaes .
Magalhães ( Peugeot 207 S2000 ) made a remarkable recovery this morning to be the fastest in five of the six special stages held , substantially reducing the difference ( 19.9 seconds) that separated him from the rival contention after the first stage but eventually finished 7.3 seconds .
Incidentally , the Portuguese driver lamented tire choice during the day Saturday , considering the fact that turned out to be decisive in the fight with Giandomenico Basso , who also won the rally in 2006 , 2007 and 2009 .
At the lowest place on the podium was Madeiran pilot Miguel Nunes ( Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X) , while Italian Luca Betti ( Ford Fiesta S2000 ) got the fourth position .
The Madeira Wine Rally ended with just 17 competitors, 34 that made the list .
