São Vicente in Madeira Island

The Municipality of São Vicente is a Portuguese municipality on the island of Madeira, Autonomous Region of Madeira, with its seat in the village of São Vivente, which gave its name to the municipality and to the parish of which it is part.

São Vicente is a pleasant village in the north of the island that lies in one of Madeira’s most beautiful valleys and where you can find caves of volcanic origin.

The Municipality of São Vicente was created in 1835, comprising the current parishes of Ponta Delgada, São Vicente and Boaventura. The cultivation of sugar cane, vineyards and lime production boosted the county’s economy.

In order to guarantee the accessibility of people and goods the first paths and trails started to appear torn out of the rock. At the time, the tourism sector gained strength for those seeking beautiful landscapes and quietness. The new accessibilities also came to shorten distances between the Capital – Funchal – and the north of the island.

In this municipality you can visit the well known Caves. 700 meters underground so that you can take a fantastic trip to the interior of the earth.

Location: São Vicente is located on the north coast of Madeira approximately 37 km from the City of Funchal. The municipality is bordered by the municipalities of Santana, Porto Moniz, Ponta do Sol, Ribeira Brava and Câmara de Lobos

The São Vicente valley is one of the most evolved valleys of Madeira Island presenting a complex genesis, characterized by differential remontant erosion processes, mass movements, and by several episodes of sedimentary and volcanic filling.
In this geosite, located at the edge of regional road 101, in Lombo da Vargem, it is possible to observe, within the watershed of the Ribeira de São Vicente, a set of relief forms characterized by flat-topped interfluves. These landscape elements correspond to relics of ancient sedimentary filling surfaces built by alluvial fans systems from torrential flow channels that drained into the basin. These alluvial fans are composed of debris-flow type deposits of conglomeratic/brackish facies associations.

São Vicente Caves

800 meters southeast of the village are the São Vicente Caves, with a Volcanism Center. These caves offer a journey to the “Center of the Earth”, along 700 m, through galleries of lava, basalt and iron, formed by the explosion of the Paúl da Serra volcano, more than 400,000 years ago.

If you are traveling along the road from São Vicente to Seixal, it is worth taking a detour to the Miradouro do Véu Noiva (Bridal Veil Viewpoint) to enjoy a beautiful view over a waterfall that flows into the sea from a chilling cliff.

The Caves and Volcanism Center provide an amazing and marvelousand unforgettablehistorical and educational memorable visit to the best that nature has to show you.
