The museum space and collections

The Museum Centre of Machico is a cultural institution created by the Municipality of Machico , after recovery of Riverside Property Solar (built in the seventeenth century ) .
In this museum you can find , in an interactive way , stories and characters that made the current city of Machico throughout its nearly 600 -year history , divided by four themes on display .

In the course of the four thematic visitors can discover and witness many historical objects : a cross of Machin , a painting of one . º Captain Grantee Machico ( Tristan Vaz Teixeira ) , a step of the seventeenth century processional with high artistic interest , a very rare seal with handle of ivory and silver imprint in the sixteenth century , several archaeological objects of ceramic , stone and metal, an inscription engraved with a block of eighteenth-century poet Francisco Alvares de Machico Nobrega ( Camões Small ) and various objects that make up the economic history social and cultural Machico , the early days of settlement , in the fifteenth century to the twentieth century . The space provides teaching resources and educational based on the new information technologies . The texts are presented in English and Portuguese .

Machico has a special place in the history of Madeira

First , the legend of Robert Machin , who have been in that area even before the Portuguese discovered the island of Madeira . Then , the characteristic of its inhabitants . The story goes that , in July 1419, João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristan Vaz Teixeira landed on the beach of Machico , having a Mass by Franciscan priests as a sign of gratitude and joy of discovery.

The August 2, 1996 , the village of Machico was elevated to city status .

Origin of the name

Little is known about the origin of the name Machico . The hypotheses are several , the most common being the legend of Machin and Anna d’ Harfet , although this more in the field of fiction . Legend has it that Robert and Anna were thwarted lovers in their union households . This led them to flee passionate about sailing . However , they were surprised by a violent storm that dragged the island , specifically the beach of Machico . Anne of Arfet died and Machin , to bury her , erected a cross on which have written their names . João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristan Vaz Teixeira to reach the Island they found the cross and named the spot as Machico .
