Madeira Core Dragon Trees Center – Núcleo de Dragoeiros das Neves

The Center for Information Service of the Natural Park of Madeira is located in the path Carried in São Gonçalo , and is known by the Center for Dragon Trees Neves.

History

The area was acquired by CISPNM Regional Government , to ensure the continuity of a remarkable group of centenarians dragoeiros and safeguard for the future as valuable assets . There are no records known about the exact origin of these specimens but it is more likely that they have developed from a nursery therein in times past. Either way , it is an undeniable value , either as a landmark monumental landscape that stretch of landscape , whether scientific .


Beyond the Core Dragon Trees centenarians there is a garden with indigenous vegetation of the coast of Madeira , with few copies and endemic Madeira archipelago . This vegetation was planted to be characteristic of the area of occurrence of dragon trees and to create a range of protection to them living there !


The Information Centre resulted from the recovery of a small dilapidated building at the site in order to work, since 1996 , as a local environmental information center, reception and polo promotion of activities related to nature conservation and biodiversity in general.

In the center are also streamlined the children’s workshops .


Guided tours of the garden of indigenous and endemic plants

In CISPNM are conducted guided tours of the garden plants indigenous and endemic species , including the Nucleus Dragon Trees centenarians .
The Dragon Tree Dracaena draco ( L. ) L. , is a slow-growing tree , evergreen , reaching 15 to 20 feet tall , with a crown -shaped umbel . The leaves are glabrous , narrow and long , gray-green color . The flowers , white , grouped in large inflorescences arise between August and October . Its berries are fleshy , showy , orange-yellow color .
From the standpoint of phytosociological the dragon tree is connected to the coastal vegetation of xerophytic characteristics , preferring rocky slopes and sunny .
Its natural range is the Macaronesia , with the exception of the Azores archipelago . Once abundant in Porto Santo , is now extinct , being rare in Madeira.


The dragon tree sap was much used in dyeing and for medicinal purposes , and the plant , at present a widespread ornamental use in parks and gardens .
Beyond the dragon trees along the garden you can find other plants common to the coast , such as the rare lavender, the kelp , the cila Madeira , the ensaião the abrotona or herb – white , several species of estreleira , the fig – the – hell, carlina or thistle – white, the cabreira the jasmine and the jasmine -yellow – white, esparto , fennel navy , the wormwood , geranium , the Globularia the malfurada the muchia golden , perpetual , the Plantago Madeira .


Some shrubs like boxwood – the – rock, the massaroco and heather and some trees such as wild olive , the marmulano , the cedar wood , beech, rolling, white -wood , the dogwood , among some copies of Lauraceae , as Barbusano , the tilde , laurel and mahogany

The Center for Information Service of the Madeira Natural Park is open to the entire population , from Monday to Friday from 9am – 12 , 30h and from 14 to 17.30 h .
