Golf, trekking and hiking are excellent alternatives for those preferring calmer activities, allowing a closer look at the natural features of these lusciously green islands.

Discover the impressive and diverse island vegetation over a walk along one of the local canals known as “levadas” or one of the many trails at the heart of the Laurissilva forest, declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Nature Site.

Due to its beauty and diverse landscape, this forest has recently been declared one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal.

Madeira Orienteering Festival
Madeira Orienteering Festival [year] 2

The Madeira Orienteering Festival (MOF) is more than a series of races; it’s a celebration of adventure, community, and environmental stewardship. Scheduled for January 12th to 14th, 2024, the festival is a beacon for orienteering enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. This blog post will guide you through the festival’s events, objectives, and unique initiatives that make it a standout experience.

The Essence of Orienteering

Orienteering is a sport that challenges both the body and mind. Participants navigate between checkpoints using maps and compasses, racing against time and terrain. The MOF takes this challenge to the stunning landscapes of Madeira, offering diverse courses and an unforgettable experience.

MOF 2024: Event Highlights

  1. January 12th – Night Middle Distance: Held at Palheiro Golf, this nocturnal race offers a unique thrill. The maps are updated to the latest standards, ensuring an exciting competition.
  2. January 13th – Forest Middle Distance: Chão da Lagoa hosts this race, where participants navigate through dense forests. It’s a part of both the Madeira Cup and Portugal Cup.
  3. January 14th – Forest Middle Distance: Ponta de São Lourenço East is the setting for this world-ranking event, offering breathtaking views and challenging navigation.

Beyond the Races: A Commitment to Excellence

The MOF aims to promote Madeira through orienteering, contributing to the sport’s evolution in various technical and organizational aspects. The festival’s commitment to excellence is evident in its meticulous planning, course design, and adherence to international standards.

GreenerAct Initiative

In partnership with Palheiro Nature Estate, the MOF encourages participants to calculate their ecological footprint using the GreenerAct app. Athletes can then “compensate” for their footprint by participating in sustainable activities, such as tree planting in Funchal’s Ecological Park. This initiative reflects the festival’s dedication to ecological protection and community interaction.

MadeiraRent Partnership

As the official rent-a-car partner of the MOF, MadeiraRent offers fantastic vehicles and prices for those traveling to the festival. This collaboration ensures a seamless experience for participants and spectators alike.

A Festival for All

Whether you’re an elite athlete, a casual orienteer, or someone looking to try something new, the MOF welcomes you. The festival’s inclusive approach ensures that everyone can enjoy the thrill of orienteering in a more playful and accessible way.

The Madeira Orienteering Festival 2024 is not just a sporting event; it’s a symbol of community, adventure, and environmental consciousness. From the night race at Palheiro Golf to the forest challenges at Chão da Lagoa and Ponta de São Lourenço, the festival promises excitement, challenge, and camaraderie.
